Understand Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States. To date, 1 in every 88 American children is identified with ASD.
Autism is a spectrum disorder characterized in various degrees by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. People with autism exhibit complex neurodevelopment. Therefore, to have autism is to learn differently.
“I obtain great satisfaction out of using my intellect.”
--Temple Grandin

With the upcoming publication of DSM V in May 2013, clinicians and educators will have a dimensional look at the specifics of the individual’s diagnosis. Included in the autism continuum will be; autistic disorder, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified and Asperger syndrome. Consistent with the Imagine philosophy, these once separate categorizations will now be viewed as within the spectrum and individual differences will be investigated to better develop treatment plans specific to the person’s strengths and needs.
“Autism is not something I have. It is integral to who I am. Eliminate the autism, and you eliminate me.  When you say you want a cure, you are saying I should be put to death.  Think about it.”
--Parrish S. Knight
